Sea Biscuit fossil

These "irregular" sea urchins--"Hardouinia mortonis"-- date between 66 and 70 million years ago and come from the Peedee Formation in North & South Carolina. Modern day echhinoderms include starfish, sea cucumbers and sand dollars. It is believed the dredging along Holden Beach disturbed a bed of fossilized sea urchins, releasing them to wash up onto the shore in numbers never seen before.
